IRON HORSE
Website Exclusive!!

Here’s an instrumental I came up with recently- it’s just me warming up for the tour really. As the band don’t live close enough to rehearse until the final few days before any gigs I tend to go in the studio to practice. I took time over the sounds which are my bare wood Les Paul and the new Iron Horse amp made for me by Paul Burford. I’ll use that amp on the tour- It’s a perfect blend of a good AC30 and a vintage Marshall- I love it to bits. The track goes between major and minor and I wanted to go for something heroic and classic – foot on monitor. I have provide a backing track to solo over – I’d be interested in what you guys came up with (Click the down arrow to the right of the backing track to download it to your computer).

BONEYARD (BACKING TRACK 2012)
Website Exclusive!!

Hi all

Above is a backing track to Boneyard to Jam with - there's bit of video showing the main riff and the chorus is just D G E and at the end it goes C G A so you should be okay figuring that out. Solos are a mixture of E major pentatonic, E minor pentatonic and E mixolydian. Lots of guitar phrases echo the vocal in that they start minor and wander into major and then return to minor ( or vice versa). I use a wah on the track and there are a lot of big bends and big vibratos. I’m trying to get some composition into the lead and make it exciting rather than just blast way over the track. The rhythm guitars are a JCM 800, and the leads are the same head but the outro solo is an ac30. Can you hear the difference? Both good tones to my ears but I like the gear change of using two or more amps in a track when it’s an instrumental. I am taking delivery of a new JTM 45 and a old school lead and bass type 20 watt head from Marshall for live use ( I can’t trust the AC30s not to blow up) and they are kindly making me up some open back 2 by 12 cabs for the shows. I have to say Marshall have been great. The amps I will be using live are the ones with no master volume – it’s a bigger tone through the PA I think and they suit my playing. This Boneyard backing track is an unusual one as the JCM800 is master volume amp- but it suits this track- and the JCM800 is a classic tone in its own right.
